UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to Germany underscores a robust and evolving alliance between the two nations, rooted in decades of collaboration across political, economic, energy, and cultural fields. The diplomatic relationship between the UAE and Germany was established in 1972, and since then, their partnership has flourished, particularly in trade and investment. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf region.
The UAE hosts around 2,000 German companies, encompassing major enterprises such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. Their cooperation extends notably into the energy sector, where both countries are engaged in joint efforts on renewable energy, climate action, decarbonisation, and energy security. In 2022, a significant agreement was signed to bolster energy security and foster industrial collaboration, which includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and the development of clean energy and climate-focused projects.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership between the UAE and Germany embraces longstanding cooperation in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. The political relationship was officially elevated in 2004 through a strategic partnership agreement, encompassing areas such as regional security, economic cooperation, and research initiatives.
Despite the global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient. Both countries continue to deepen their cooperation across strategic sectors, demonstrating a commitment to expanding their collaborative efforts in various fields.
