The United Arab Emirates celebrated a historic moment at the 2026 Asian Games as 18-year-old Mariam Kareem clinched the country’s first gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles. Kareem’s outstanding performance set an Asian Games record with a time of 54.31 seconds, narrowly surpassing Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems, who finished 0.27 seconds behind to claim silver. India’s Vithya Ramraj completed the podium with a bronze medal finish.
This victory not only marked UAE’s first gold but also added to their athletics achievements, following 19-year-old Sulaiman Abdulrahman’s silver medal in the men’s 400m final. Abdulrahman recorded a time of 44.99 seconds, further highlighting the UAE’s prowess in track events at the Games.
Mariam Kareem’s journey to gold included a personal best of 55.14 seconds in the qualifying rounds, which she significantly improved upon in the final. Her achievement was met with congratulations from UAE Athletics Federation President Major General Dr Mohammed Abdullah Al Murr, who praised her outstanding accomplishment.
