Sharjah has unveiled a groundbreaking logistics corridor in collaboration with Oman, slashing cargo transit times from nearly three months to a mere 35 days. This new initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance supply chain efficiency, cut transportation costs, and fortify trade connections between the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and other regional markets. The corridor establishes a direct link between Sharjah and Oman’s major ports, namely Sohar, Duqm, and Salalah, via the Khatmat Malaha and Al Madam border crossings. As operations continue to mature, authorities anticipate further reductions in transit times.
To promote the use of this corridor, Sharjah has introduced toll exemptions for cargo trucks that utilize the designated routes from Oman. This initiative also encompasses expedited customs clearance, more efficient cargo movement, and the flexibility for businesses to handle customs procedures at inland container terminals rather than directly at border crossings. Officials suggest that logistics costs could see a reduction of approximately 15%, contingent on the type of cargo and transportation needs. The corridor is set to offer significant advantages to manufacturers by facilitating quicker transit of raw materials and finished goods.
This development aligns with Sharjah’s strategic goal of reinforcing its status as a pivotal regional logistics and manufacturing hub. The emirate boasts over 3,000 factories that collectively contribute about a quarter of its GDP. The enhanced trade route is likely to boost exports and draw international investors eager to tap into markets across Africa, India, and Asia. By improving efficiency and connectivity, this corridor is poised to play a crucial role in Sharjah’s economic expansion.
Operational since May 14, the corridor supports cargo movement in both directions, bolstered by streamlined customs processes, real-time data sharing, and dedicated fast-track lanes for shipments. This systematic approach not only accelerates trade but also positions Sharjah as a competitive player in the regional and global logistics landscape.
