Demis Hassabis, a key figure in the AI community and co-founder of DeepMind, is transitioning from his role as chief executive of Google DeepMind amid a significant leadership overhaul within the AI research unit. Established in 2010, DeepMind has been at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovations, and Hassabis has been instrumental in its success. Now, he is set to become the chair of the organization and will also serve as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This shift will allow him to step back from daily operations to concentrate on advancing AI research, particularly in the realm of artificial general intelligence.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, who currently holds the position of chief technology officer, will assume leadership of the organization under the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis commented that this change would enable him to devote more attention to the strategic development of advanced AI technologies, ensuring their positive impact on society. Additionally, he will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery enterprise that originated from DeepMind.
The restructuring comes at a time when several key figures in Google’s AI division are departing. Notably, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, two senior AI engineers, are exiting to start their own venture, Discovery Loop. Their new startup aims to focus on machine learning, as well as science and engineering research, marking a new chapter in their careers.
