The recent state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the robust and evolving strategic partnership between the two nations. This alliance, which has been nurtured over decades, encompasses a wide array of sectors including politics, economics, energy, and culture. The foundation of this relationship was laid in 1972 when diplomatic ties were first established. Over the years, these ties have flourished, notably in trade and investment, making the UAE a pivotal trading partner for Germany in the Gulf region.
Trade between the United Arab Emirates and Germany reached over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion) last year, positioning the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf. The presence of around 2,000 German companies in the UAE, such as industry giants BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, highlights the significant economic collaboration between the two countries. Their cooperation has also made substantial strides in the energy sector, focusing on renewable energy resources, climate action, decarbonization processes, and ensuring energy security.
In 2022, the UAE and Germany took a significant step forward by signing an agreement designed to bolster energy security and industrial cooperation. This agreement includes provisions for the UAE to supply liquefied natural gas to Germany and engage in joint projects aimed at promoting clean energy and climate initiatives. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainable development and energy transition, critical areas for both nations.
Beyond trade and energy, the partnership has expanded into research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. In 2004, a strategic partnership agreement was signed, elevating political ties to cover regional security, economic cooperation, and research. This formal elevation of ties reflects the comprehensive nature of the partnership and the importance both countries place on maintaining a strong bilateral relationship.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient. Both countries continue to explore opportunities for expanding cooperation across strategic sectors, ensuring that their partnership is not only enduring but also dynamic and forward-looking.
