The United Arab Emirates showcased a strong performance in their opening match of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup, securing a decisive 4-0 victory against Yemen in Group B at Alinma Stadium, Jeddah. The UAE’s commanding win was highlighted by Nicolas Gimenez, who not only opened the scoring in the 26th minute but also completed his brace shortly after the second half began.
Yemen’s difficulties were compounded when defender Nader Sahal inadvertently scored an own goal just ten minutes after Gimenez’s initial strike, granting the UAE a comfortable lead. Luan Pereira added to Yemen’s woes by netting a third goal before the halftime whistle, further cementing the UAE’s dominance in the match.
Under the guidance of new coach Zlatko Dalic, the UAE controlled the game with 61 percent possession and managed to take 12 shots, demonstrating their attacking prowess. In contrast, Yemen struggled to make an impact with only two attempts, neither of which threatened the UAE goal.
Looking ahead, the UAE is set to face Bahrain on September 27, followed by a match against Qatar on September 30 in their final Group B encounter. The top two teams from the group will advance to the semifinals, and the UAE is aiming to secure their third Gulf Cup title, having previously won the tournament in 2007 and 2013.
