20th Century Studios and Imagine Entertainment have unveiled the trailer for “Whalefall,” a gripping survival thriller featuring Austin Abrams. The film, adapted from Daniel Kraus’ celebrated novel, centers on a young man’s struggle for survival after being swallowed by a gigantic sperm whale, with only a finite amount of oxygen to keep him alive. The movie is slated for release in Indian theaters on October 16.
Austin Abrams takes on the role of Jay Gardiner, a young diver grappling with the loss of his father, portrayed by Josh Brolin. Seeking closure, Jay ventures to California’s Central Coast, diving in search of his father’s remains. However, his quest takes a harrowing turn when he is engulfed by a massive sperm whale. Trapped in the whale’s belly with merely an hour’s worth of oxygen, Jay must rely on his instincts and the wisdom imparted by his father to find a way out.
The film combines the tension of underwater adventure with the tight confines of survival drama, all while exploring the poignant bond between Jay and his deceased father. Director, co-writer, and producer Brian Duffield shared that the production involved shooting on a custom-built whale set in Studio City, California, to authentically capture the film’s unique setting.
Brian Duffield directs the film and has co-written the screenplay alongside Daniel Kraus, staying true to the original narrative of Kraus’ novel. The cast includes Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd, alongside Abrams and Brolin, contributing to the film’s dynamic ensemble.
“Whalefall” offers a fresh perspective on the survival genre, presenting a modern tale of endurance against insurmountable odds. With its distinct premise and underwater backdrop, the film promises to deliver an intense and emotionally resonant experience when it makes its way to Indian theaters on October 16.
