Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai is on track to develop an extensive 50-kilometre autonomous people mover network, designed to seamlessly transport passengers across its vast complex. This ambitious project will feature nine stations when it initially launches, with construction slated for completion by December 2031. The airport’s first phase is scheduled to open in 2032, promising a significant advancement in airport transit systems. As further phases roll out, the network is set to expand to 14 stations, establishing it as the most extensive automated people mover network worldwide, surpassing current systems at airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK.
With the completion of its first phase, Al Maktoum International Airport aims to boost its passenger capacity significantly. This phase includes the development of the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, which collectively will elevate the airport’s annual passenger handling capability to 130 million. Ultimately, the airport is designed to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and manage 12 million tonnes of cargo each year, marking it as a key player in the global aviation industry.
The airport’s connectivity doesn’t stop there; it is set to integrate with a broader transportation network. Plans are underway for an Airport Express Link, which will connect Al Maktoum International with Dubai International Airport, enhancing travel efficiency between the two major hubs. Furthermore, there are future plans for connections to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, thereby expanding the airport’s accessibility and linking it more seamlessly with the region’s transit infrastructure.
